Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer breaks down three real defensive techniques he used throughout his own career, the same rolling and head movement that let elite fighters take the sting out of a knockout blow. Every technique here belongs to a different style of fighter and each one carries a different level of risk depending on how you fight. Breaking Down How Elite Boxers Roll With Punches: The Jake LaMotta method: shifting your weight onto a stable leg as the punch lands, riding the force side to side instead of taking it clean. Tony isn't a fan of this one against combination punchers, though it works well if you are a come forward fighter walking someone down. The Roy Jones Jr. method: rolling backwards away from a straight punch at the very last second, turning what could be a knockout blow into a shot that barely lands. Tony calls Roy Jones Jr. his favorite fighter of all time, but still isn't a fan of this technique even for long range boxers. The Canelo and Carl Froch method: turning your head and upper body away while still inside punching range, the exact style that made Roberto Duran's defense so underrated. Tony has personally sparred with Carl Froch and could never land a clean shot on him but warns this one is not for 99 percent of people. Tony's favorite defense: not the slip, the roll, or the block, but simply the step back, since you cannot get hit if you are not in range at all.
