Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer explains how drilling one specific technique or skill for around 10 hours fixes and improves that skill. At 13 or 14, a hurt right hand forced Tony to train with only his left hand for two weeks and his jab got very strong while he perfected the punches in his lead hand. After every session while everyone else left, he stayed at his favorite bag drilling the lead hook to the body hundreds of times. Tony improved the lead hook to the body and made it his signature shot, putting a Polish champion on the floor for a couple of minutes. The head coach of Great Britain called it the best body shot he had ever seen. At 17, England coach Dave Binns showed Tony the correct way to transfer the weight into the punch keeping it long and straight and how to punch through the target which made his straight right hand hit even harder. He drilled that power punch over and over, landed it flush on an Indian national champion's nose and won when the fight was stopped. To improve your boxing technique and get ahead of someone in your gym who does it better, record yourself and write down exactly what to fix and how to fix it. Then spend your next 10 boxing training sessions fully focused on that one thing without filming. Use the IDEAL punching method on any technique you want to improve: identify your mistakes, drill them out, keep evaluating yourself, reanalyze, then level up.
