Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, pushes back with real examples, pointing out that Usyk, Bivol, and Anthony Joshua all use this exact footwork heavy style at world level. That disagreement leads into a much heavier discussion about brain health and concussions in boxing. Breaking Down Olympic Style Boxing: Olympic style boxing: Frank has called this footwork heavy, in and out approach nothing more than fencing, tracing its roots back to Eastern European and Russian coaching influence that also shaped Cuban boxing decades earlier. Every boxer has his own style: Frank clarifies his actual issue was never the style itself, since he calls it unbelievable and effective for plenty of fighters. His problem is branding one specific style as the definitive Olympic style when every Olympic boxer has their own. Finding your own style: both agree the real goal is adapting to whatever is in front of you rather than forcing one approach, the same philosophy Frank leaned on when a much bigger Finnish opponent forced him to change his entire game plan at the 1965 European Championships. Breaking Down Brain Health In Boxing: Concussions: they can be severe enough to erase memory of the fight itself, even though everything else seems fine afterward. Frank's own former coach was knocked out cold in Ireland during the 1960s and woke up an hour later on a snooker table with no memory of having fought at all. Tony won a European title at sixteen while so concussed he could not remember whether he had actually won until his own teammates told him. The bigger warning: most brain damage in boxing happens in sparring, not in fights, since sparring gets far less oversight and caution. Tony has built a full program specifically to teach people how to spar correctly, aimed at preventing exactly this kind of damage.
